Moopie: Between Techno, Folk and Reissues
Melbourne DJ and label head Moopie discusses his philosophy and busy global agenda. From festivals to reissues, his vision knows no bounds.
Moopie, also known as Matthew Xue, is a DJ and head of the Melbourne label A Colourful Storm, founded in 2016. In an April interview he said, “All art should evoke some feeling”. His ethos appears in sets ranging from house and techno to breaks, and in the label’s releases that span spoken word, IDM and folk.
In the weeks before the interview Xue played back‑to‑back with DJ Plead, OK Williams and XDB, and performed at events such as Pitch Music & Arts, Miscellania and the club night un:send. Last weekend Moopie appeared at the album release show for indie‑pop artist Carla dal Forno, hosted by A Colourful Storm. He described the vibe as “more laid‑back” and noted that despite playing 10,000‑capacity festivals he also enjoys “kinda bro‑y tech‑house parties”.
In his contribution to Recognise mix series, Moopie blends techno, breaks and electro, inserting a sudden Drexciyan burst around the twenty‑minute mark. He explained that club music is “formulaic” and that this formula lets it “conjure feelings” unattainable by other techniques, underscoring his devotion to the dance floor.
Xue recalled iconic moments, such as in 2015 when he dropped The Knife’s ‘Silent Shout’ at a festival, and a set after the death of Mark E. Smith where he layered a Fall frontman’s spoken scores over techno. “People seemed to love that one”, he said, highlighting his blend of nostalgia and forward‑thinking.
