Carl Cox puts unreleased music into ‘Skintown’
Kieron J. Walsh’s film adapts Ciarán McMenamin’s novel: two lads from Enniskillen trying to get out of town on stolen MDMA during the 1994 ceasefire. The key set-piece is a rave with a beach afterparty, and that is where Cox turns up on screen.
Carl Cox has given unreleased music to ‘Skintown’, a film set in the Northern Irish rave scene of the nineties, directed by Kieron J. Walsh and premiered this past weekend at the Edinburgh film festival.
The script adapts the novel Ciarán McMenamin published in 2018. It follows characters played by Jack Rowan and Chris Walley as they try to escape their hometown — Enniskillen, nicknamed Skintown — selling stolen MDMA during the 1994 IRA ceasefire. Jamie-Lee O’Donnell and Hope Ikpoku Jr. round out the cast.
The central set-piece is a rave with a beach afterparty, and that is where Cox appears on screen. Alongside his unreleased material, the soundtrack gathers The Prodigy, Elastica, Happy Mondays and Jeff Mills: the era is portrayed by its own music rather than by an imitation of it.
It is not his only recent trip to the cinema either: he also contributed three tracks to Andy Serkis’s animated take on ‘Animal Farm’. Meanwhile, his Sunday residency at [UNVRS] carries on.
