The SL-1200 turns 55 and Technics dips it in gold
12,000 units, gold detailing on the tonearm, platter rim and buttons, and an engraved badge carrying each unit’s serial number. It is shown on 20 August in Warsaw and goes on sale in September.
The SL-1200 turns 55 and Technics is marking it with a run limited to 12,000 units. Each deck carries an engraved anniversary badge beside its serial number: no two are the same.
The gold runs across the tonearm, the platter rim, the strobe marks, the knobs and the buttons. A custom slipmat is included, and there are seven colours: gold, black, white, red, blue, green and grey.
Pricing will be announced ahead of the global release, due in September. The public unveiling is on 20 August, at DMC DJs Day in Warsaw.
Fifty-five years on, the 1200 is still the piece of furniture holding up a good part of club culture. Our own logo has a tonearm resting on the O: the reference is not an accident.
