Bristol is building a 5AM club inside a 1938 cinema
The former Union Street ODEON now has a licence until 5AM on Fridays and Saturdays. It still has no name or opening date: electronic music, film and theatre will share the building.
A cinema can close and leave behind more than an empty room. The former Union Street ODEON in Bristol is being prepared as a new home for electronic music, film and theatre.
The building had screened films since 1938 and closed as a cinema in February 2026. Its newly approved licence allows activity until 5AM on Fridays and Saturdays, and 4AM through the rest of the week. A name and opening date have not yet been announced.
Behind it are Luke Turner and Jack Scales, the team linked to The Underground, Saw Mills and Alfresco Disco. Their current venue, The Underground, faces closure for redevelopment; the old cinema is not a side project but the next chapter.
In a scene used to counting closures, the unusual story is a new floor moving into a building whose nightlife appeared to be over.
