Black Coffee wins his court case against Maserati: seven million rand
The Johannesburg High Court has ordered the brand’s South African arm to return the seven million rand — around $438,000 — the DJ had tied up in a convertible that was never delivered, plus interest and legal costs.
The story starts in 2022, when the South African producer bought an MC20 Coupé for around seven million rand. Two years later he decided to trade it for the convertible, a fully customised MC20 Cielo valued at roughly nine million.
The dealer offered seven million for the coupé as a trade-in, leaving about two million to settle on delivery. Delivery was originally expected by mid-2025.
It never came. Production stalled and no firm handover date was ever given, so the DJ took the case to the Johannesburg High Court to recover the seven million that had been tied up in the deal for two years. In August 2026 the court sided with him: the money goes back, with interest and legal costs.
Behind the anecdote there is a bigger shift. A club artist taking a luxury brand to court and winning says a fair amount about the weight the electronic scene has quietly built up outside the booth.
